South African Adventurer Riaan Manser has been confirmed as one of Cape Town Stopover's Volvo Ocean Race Ambassadors.

Riaan needs very little introduction, rising to prominence when he became the first person to cycle around the entire perimeter of Africa. For over two years, he pedalled a massive 37,000kms through 34 countries; some of which rank as the most dangerous places on Earth. It was a feat that earned him the title Adventurer of the Year 2006 and made his resulting book, 'Around Africa on my bicycle', a best-seller.

In July 2009 Riaan again set another world first when he became the first person to circumnavigate the world's fourth largest island of Madagascar by kayak; this was done solo.

In his most recent exploit, he paddled around Iceland with Dan Skinstad, Dan has mild cerebral palsy, and earned Riaan's absolute respect by completing the 5000km journey in icy, difficult conditions.

When asked why he showed no hesitation about accepting the role, his answer was fast, and concise. " I love the sea. I love Cape Town. I love my country." Riaan's passion revolves around the youth, and environmental issues, and it's in these areas that we can expect to see him getting a 'hands-on' involvement during the stopover. From the outset, it was clear that the opportunity to use  the Volvo Ocean Race to enrich young lives, and to create awareness about the environment, was important for Riaan.

Riaan is working closely with a school near Gordon’s Bay called Temperance Town Primary, and assisting the previously disadvantaged youngsters to meet the challengers of modern life and schooling. A group of youngsters from the school will be selected by Riaan to experience sailing for the first time ever, and it’s in the creation and sharing of those opportunities that is providing Riaan Manser with the outlet for his considerable energy when he’s not tacking solo adventures in extreme parts of the planet.
