The hour has arrived at the Volvo Ocean race base in Alicante, who are throwing open their doors to the public at 6pm local time this evening. The expected glitz and glamour will kick off a 3 week ‘fiesta’ which has been choreographed by Irishman John Donnelly. The former rock star has masterminded tonight’s show, which promises to be a fitting opening to the world’s greatest off-shore sailing event. Donnelly told volvooceanrace.com the Race Village boasted something for sailors and landlubbers alike. “For me it’s all about having something for everyone,” said Donnelly, who is also Percussion Director for the 2012 London Olympics. “Whether you are coming to the Race Village to watch a concert or to see the In-Port Racing or to try sailing, there’s so much to do. “I want to see people from kids to 100-year-olds coming to the Race Village and having a great time. “The Volvo Ocean Race isn’t just about sailing, it’s about an experience that people can come and be part of and enjoy.” |
Jeff Ayliffe had an exclusive chat to PUMA Ocean Racing's skipper Ken Read today. When they last chatted, Ken was hoping to be back for the Volvo Ocean race 2011, but they had not confirmed.
