The crews of the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race are on their way, after a near perfect re-start day from the V & A Waterfront. Thousands of spectators lined the quay to watch the departure ceremony, and near perfect conditions with good wind resulted in an exciting dash around the in-port course, before the teams turned their noses towards the South and headed to Abu Dhabi. Overnight however, the wind dropped off to almost zero, and the frustrated fleet were still struggling in virtually no wind this morning.
More concern for the fleet is the prospect of another 48 hours of windless conditions having failed to hook into a breezy weather system as previously expected.
“All our weather strategy is in pieces now as the fleet has failed to catch the low pressure as planned and I suspect we will all sit waiting for a new Westerly wind to pick us up in the next day or two” said Abu Dhabi Racing skipper Ian Walker.
So light were the conditions that overall race leaders Team Telefónica were forced to put down their anchor to avoid being washed backwards.
