Puma's 'Mar Mostro', above, still leads the race to the doldrums. South African Jono Swain - thinking about Cape Town? Another day, another constantly changing picture, and after Puma Ocean racing tood over at the head of the fleet, Groupama have been making good speed again having rounded the Cape Verde Islands. At the 0700 UTC position report Cammas and co. were 320 miles behind leg leaders PUMA as the fleet charged towards the Doldrums, a notorious area of dynamic, moving high pressure lying either side of the Equator characterised by light winds but notorious for sudden squalls. Once at the Doldrums, which they could reach later today, the teams will have to negotiate their way through the fickle weather systems – and the race could start all over again. Like a constant shadow to PUMA’s Mar Mostro, Iker Martínez’s Team Telefónica were right over the American team’s shoulders this morning trailing by seven miles behind having gained more than five miles on their rivals overnight. “Telefónica are doing an incredibly good job of catching up,” said PUMA’s media crew member Amory Ross. “We cannot seem to lose them. They are sailing really well and gaining a few miles every sched. It’s going to make the light-air sailing just around the corner very tense, and it will surely keep our guys working hard to take back some of the miles before we get there.” |
Jeff Ayliffe had an exclusive chat to PUMA Ocean Racing's skipper Ken Read today. When they last chatted, Ken was hoping to be back for the Volvo Ocean race 2011, but they had not confirmed. The team are are not only back, but have experienced a transatlantic victory aboard the new boat 'Mar Mostro', and Read told Jeff he was delighted to preparing for Alicante and the start of Volvo Ocean race action
